Education Minister Dipu Moni in an online briefing today announces that all the Public and Private Universities are expected to open up and all the regular classes and other activities will be held accordingly from May 24, 2021.
The dormitories and residential holdings of the universities are expected to open by May 17. ‘There is no plan so far for conducting exam during this period’ she says. However online classes will be continued as per schedule.
The Government did shut all the educational institutions since March 17 last year as the country registered its first case back on March 8.
The decision to open up institutions lagged several times. The decision came at a moment when many university students including Jahangirnagar University and Rajshahi University are holding demonstrations demanding to open up their halls and dormitories. At Dhaka University, some students are reported to break into Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall. More than 50 students joined in the protest according to some media reports.
The countrywide vaccination round-up is started on February 7.
‘All the residential students, teachers, and officials must vaccinate themselves as a measure of precaution within this timeline.’ Dipu Moni added.
As the World Health Organization (WHO) advised the governments of the world to reopen if the rate of being positive against all the testing gets down to 5 percent or lower and it continues to stay low for 14 days straight.
The schedule of BCS exams also might get adjusted and the age limit for taking the exam will also be taken into consideration, she added.
There were about 327 new cases reported and news of seven death on Sunday. Now the daily infection rate is 2.33 percent and 3.14 percent on Sunday and Saturday respectively, says the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The government is expecting if this rate continues to sustain then there will be less or no risk in opening up educational institutes. The government also does not want to risk the students by opening up early and wants to maintain the highest level of precaution.
